12 Things About Me

Welcome to my blog of confusion. Why is it so confusing? I have no idea? It just is. Once I get my brain to slow down enough for me to transcribe its contents I’d be amazing.

I scoured the depths of the internet for some genius insights on crafting the ultimate ‘About Me’ page for my blog. After stumbling through a few cringeworthy attempts over the past year, from vague ramblings to borderline nonsensical spiels, I’ve finally decided to grace the world with 12 previously undisclosed gems about yours truly.

So let’s just dig right in, shall we?

1.  I had my first car when I was 17

Oh, the memories of my beloved 58 VW Bug in radiant canary yellow! It was a dream come true to finally call her mine. Our home in Oxnard, Ca was where she belonged, but one fateful day, while my mother and I were visiting Los Angeles, we paid a visit to a family friend who owned a car garage. Little did we know that he had just completed working on my car and was willing to part with it for $700. The excitement was overwhelming! Sadly, our time together was cut short, as just three weeks later, my precious car was stolen and stripped. Oh, how I long for those days with my dear VW Bug!

2. In High School, me and some friends performed at one of our Homecoming rallies.

We came to the brilliant conclusion that as we’re on the brink of leaving high school, it’s high time for us to show off our moves at a rally. It’s not the kind of thing we’d have ever imagined doing in our younger years, but hey, we were feeling daring. And as if that wasn’t wild enough, one of our campus security officers was part of our crew. Picture this: there we were, busting out some killer dance moves to New Edition’s ‘Poison’, and to top it off, we were supposed to scream “Kawabunga” like the TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) at the end of the song. Well, guess what? When it came down to it, I was the lone ranger belting it out. Talk about lucky, right?!

3. My first hangover ever is thanks to the famous Strawberry Hill.

As a high schooler, my friend and I were like budgeting pros, and we found this gem called Boone’s Farm Strawberry Hill for less than $5. So, we sipped on some Strawberry Hill at a football game after-party. But, oh boy, I had to bail early, and to make matters worse, my mom’s ex-husband (aka step-dad at the time) had to take me to my all-time favorite spot, iHop (International House of Pancakes). The catch? I couldn’t fully appreciate those pancakes. Instead, he kindly pointed out that I was experiencing my first-ever hangover and gave me a pep talk about pulling myself together before my mom got home. And you know what? I did it. Like a champ.🍓🥞✨

4. I grew up by the beach.

In Oxnard, Ca, the Port Hueneme beach was just a quick five to ten-minute stroll from my house. Having moved from Los Angeles, where the beaches were fifteen to twenty minutes away, Oxnard felt like a dream come true. The Channel Island Harbor was less than five minutes away, making everyday life feel like a perpetual vacation. Ever since my mother moved us to Oxnard, I’ve sought out the same kind of community everywhere I go – tranquil and pristine, a true haven for the soul.

5. I used to think Marriage was pointless.

So, I used to go around telling everyone that marriage was nothing but a piece of paper that trapped you from leaving. Funny thing is, maybe that’s why my 17-year marriage eventually fell apart. Huh, maybe I should be feeling down about it. Oh well, I guess now I have a different perspective, well, sort of.

6. If you are in the market for a ‘Low Maintenance’ friend. I’m your girl.

I completely relate to being that friend who doesn’t call or text much. It’s like that scene in “My Best Friend’s Wedding” with Julia Roberts, where she’s asked about her return calls. I have a small circle of friends who get my need for space. They’ve voiced their concerns, but they understand and accept me for who I am – or at least that’s what they say. (wink)

7. I tend to over analyze everything. I mean everything.

My oldest daughter often advises me to take some time to relax. According to her, I tend to overthink everything and that I don’t need to analyze every little detail. My view is that every question has an answer, without exception. Even if the answers may not always be what we hope for, I find solace in considering all the potential scenarios that come to mind.

8. In the last 90’s early 2000’s I worked at the Chamber of Commerce. Politics, Yay.

Throughout this period, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Small Business department, engaging extensively with government officials in Texas, including the esteemed Bush family. Embracing the heightened pressure and relentless demands of the role, I thrived in this environment. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the officials were equipped with pre-written speeches, often requiring subtle cues to stay on track. It’s moments like these that added an exhilarating dimension to my role, especially when I found myself nudging the Fire Chief, Mayor, and others back on course. Truly memorable experiences.

9. When Obama won the election, I was happy that the door was opened for more options as POTUS. However.

I have always maintained a cautious approach to the outcome. I recall the time of his victory, and how people would inquire about my sentiments. My response typically revolved around gratitude for being able to witness a black POTUS during my lifetime, as well as the opportunity for my children to recognize that no dream is unattainable. Regardless, I couldn’t shake the feeling that his triumph was accompanied by a sense of sadness and diversion. Regrettably, it seems that my apprehensions have been justified thus far. Nonetheless, I harbor no ill will; I simply wish to express my observations in a positive light.

10. I learned how to shoot.

I have long desired to learn how to shoot. However, I hesitated to seek guidance from the people around me, as I didn’t fully trust them to teach me according to my preferences. Perhaps I come across as a bit controlling, but I hold a deep respect for firearms, recognizing their capability to determine life and death, with no middle ground. There is a prevalent sense of fear associated with individuals who are armed, yet one must consider: “Who are the ones perpetrating the shootings?” It is typically not those who obtained their firearms legally. After all, the process of obtaining a license involves thorough scrutiny by the FBI. I am currently looking to acquire the Sig Sauer 1911 two-tone .45 with a 3.3-inch barrel. Soon, she will be in my possession, to add to my lovely collection.

11. Today my new Passport finally came.

Now I am all set and excited for our upcoming trip to South Korea later this year! I can’t wait to experience the beauty of sitting under the Cherry blossom trees. Plus, we have Hawaii lined up for spring! Time to buckle down and get all my school work in order. (update: We did not take this trip because a family member had gotten ill then COVID hit)

12. Finally, I am finishing up my Criminal Justice/Psychology degree.

I’ve been asked what I am going to do with the degree? Am I going into law enforcement? The answer is… Nope, I’m not about to go chasing down bad guys, unless it’s from behind a desk, of course. If not that, I might just become a professional customs specialist or something. Still haven’t quite figured it out yet. (The degree is truly for my own satisfaction)

These are just 12 facts about me to help get to know me a bit.

  2. Thank you so much Luci. I am slightly jealous that you are by the beach considering I am in Texas and there is no beaches around here without being on the highway for 6 hours.

  3. Unique and fun way to write an “About Me” page. I think it’s cool to learn such different things about you. Growing up by the beach grabbed my attention – probably because after living in the middle of big cities and then the mountains, I just moved to live in walking distance of the beach. I love it. Congratulations on getting your passport and getting ready for two huge trips: South Korea and Hawaii!! How awesome! Good luck getting your degree done!
    xx Luci
