It’s time for Fandango’s weekly Story Starter prompt. Here’s how it works. Every Tuesday morning Fandango will give you a “teaser” sentence or sentence fragment and your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to build a story (prose or poetry) around that sentence/fragment. It doesn’t have to be the first sentence in your story, and you don’t even have to use it in your post at all if you don’t want to. The purpose of the teaser is simply to spark your imagination and to get your storytelling juices flowing.
This week’s Story Starter teaser is: “When the song started playing on the radio, Vince stopped what he was doing and began to cry.“

When the song started playing on the radio, Vince stopped what he was doing and began to cry. It wasn’t the emotional lyrics or the haunting melody that got to him—it was the fact that the song was “Baby Shark.” After spending three straight days at his nephew’s birthday party, where “Baby Shark” was played on a merciless loop, Vince thought he had finally escaped. He had survived the party, even making it through the pinata incident without a scratch. But here it was, stalking him in his own kitchen, between the blender and his much-needed cup of coffee.
As the “doo doo doo doo doo doo” infiltrated his space, Vince looked around frantically for any sign of his toddler nephew—perhaps he was a pint-sized DJ with a wicked sense of humor. But no, it was just Vince, the radio, and a slowly crumbling resolve. With a deep sigh, he turned off the radio, pulled out his phone, and made a mental note to start a support group for adults traumatized by children’s music. The first meeting would be called “Survivors of the Shark: Finding Peace in a Post-Baby Shark World.”
